SEO Promotion of an Online Clothing Store in Ukraine: Detailed Case Study with Results
Industry: online clothing store (women’s and men’s clothing, accessories, footwear)
Goal: to rank the website for commercial and informational queries, increase organic traffic and sales without relying on paid advertising.
Initial Conditions: Starting SEO Promotion
Before SEO implementation, the online store had been operating for over a year, but the organic channel generated almost no traffic. Most customers came from paid advertising, making the business dependent on a constant budget. The website’s average visibility in search engines was extremely low.
Key issues identified during the audit:
– Catalog and filter pages were poorly indexed due to robots.txt errors and missing optimized canonical links
– Duplicate pages caused by sorting, pagination, and URL parameters
– Categories and subcategories had a weak structure, overlapping, and did not consider seasonality or trends
– Meta tags were duplicated; category pages lacked or had minimal text
– Images were not optimized: large file sizes, no WebP or lazy-load, slowing down page speed
– No structured data (Schema) for products, prices, availability, and breadcrumbs
– Lack of internal linking between product pages and categories
– The site did not pass Core Web Vitals: high CLS and low LCP on mobile devices
SEO Goals and KPIs
The project set concrete 6-month goals:
– Achieve 1,200 clicks from search per month
– Reach 50,000 impressions in Google Search Console
– Maintain an average CTR of at least 2.2%
– Rank high-frequency queries in the TOP-10, mid-frequency queries in TOP-15
– Increase organic share of orders to at least 30% without increasing ad spend
Technical Optimization and Fixing Critical Issues
The first phase included a full technical audit and resolving issues that hindered indexing and ranking:
– Configured robots.txt and sitemap for proper indexing
– Removed duplicate pages via canonical URLs and pagination setup
– Implemented rel=”next” and rel=”prev” for paginated navigation
– Optimized page speed: enabled lazy-load, compressed images, added WebP format
– Fixed Core Web Vitals: LCP reduced to 2.3s, CLS to 0.08
– Implemented Schema.org structured data: Product, BreadcrumbList, Offer
– Corrected H1-H3 headings for categories and product pages
– Added favicon and optimized Open Graph for social media
Keyword Research for Fashion E-Commerce
We built a semantic core including:
– Main categories: women’s clothing, men’s clothing, dresses, suits, footwear
– Subcategories and facet filters: color, size, brand
– Seasonal queries: “spring-summer 2023 dresses,” “men’s coats Ukraine”
– Geo-targeted queries: “buy dress Kyiv,” “buy shirt Ukraine”
– Informational queries for the blog: “how to choose a prom dress,” “how to style a cardigan”
In total, over 5,000 keywords were organized by site structure and priority.
Content Optimization and Landing Pages
After technical preparation, we focused on content:
– Created 1,500–2,000 character SEO texts for each category and subcategory with relevant keywords
– Added product descriptions and unique page titles
– Optimized meta tags (Title & Description) using conversion-oriented phrases
– Implemented internal linking between categories, product pages, and blog articles
– Launched a blog with useful articles: “Seasonal Fashion Trends,” “How to Choose a Dress for Your Body Type,” “Top 5 Accessories 2023”
Link-Building and Domain Authority Strategy
To strengthen rankings and domain authority, we implemented link-building:
– Published articles on authoritative fashion portals with backlinks
– Guest posts on niche blogs and forums
– Crowdfunding marketing with carefully placed links in discussions and reviews
– Links from local directories and business listings in Ukraine
Results of SEO Promotion
Three months into the project, significant growth was observed. By six months:
– Average CTR: 2.4%
– 70% of category queries ranked in the TOP-20, 35% in TOP-10
– Organic traffic increased 5x compared to initial levels
– Organic share of orders grew to 32%, reducing reliance on paid ads
Key Insights and Takeaways
– Technical optimization and error fixing account for 50% of SEO success
– Semantic strategy must include categories, filters, brands, and seasonality
– Category and blog content enhances relevance and conversion
– Competing without link-building in a competitive niche is very difficult
– Regular analytics and strategy adjustments allow scaling of results
Conclusion and Next Steps
The project demonstrated that even in a competitive fashion e-commerce niche, stable organic traffic growth is achievable without large advertising budgets. The next steps include expanding the semantic core with informational queries, implementing SEO for regional subdomains (Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa), and further improving Core Web Vitals for optimal mobile performance.
